Welcome to another OddLearning post!
Today we will tell you some facts about the origin and meaning of 666
We all have seen or heard the use of 666 and we tend to assimilate it for Satan, the devil, or the Antichrist. It`s commonly used in Halloween to increase the horror.
But do we really know what it means, or where it started?
Mathematically it’s just a number, the result of different equations but how about in religion?
The Origin; The book of revelations by John (Jewish Christian prophet) in the New Testament.
666 is known as the number of the Beast which is a term in the book of revelation, of the new testament. The actual number is mentioned ONCE in Revelation 13:15-18. This passage cryptically asserts 666 to be “the man’s number” or “the number of a man” associated with the beast, the antagonist creature that appears briefly closely to the end of the apocalyptic vision.
In case, you don’t know, the book of revelation is the only apocalyptic document in the New Testament. Where the author (John) describes a series of prophetic visions such as the whore of Babylon, the beast (The one we are talking about with the 666) and the second coming of Jesus.
People have tried to identify the number 666, and they usually interpret it in three ways:
- Using gematria to calculate the number of a world’s leader’s name, in order to match it with the number of the beast.
- The number of the beast as the duration the beast will reign
- Symbolism for the Antichrist.
As I mentioned the passage (In the revelations book) cryptically asserts 666 to be “the man’s number” or “the number of a man”, Jehovah’s witnesses believe that this represents the world’s unified governments in opposition to God, as they are of human origin rather than spirit entities.
There is people that take very serious the superstitions of 666 and start fearing and avoiding it, developing a phobia called hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia (Fear of six hundred sixty-six), This phobia has been feed by horror films such as The Omen, The Doom Generation, End Days, Phantom of the Opera and more.
(We Mentioned this phobia in our Do you know the name of your Phobias? Post, check it out!)
Some examples of the superstitions are:
In 2003 US Route 666 in New Mexico was changed to Route 491. Why? Well there was a spokesperson that stated “The devil’s out of here, and we say goodbye and good riddance.”
Women concerned of giving birth back on June 6, 2006 (6/6/06)
In 2013 cross-country runner Codie Thacker refused to run in the regional meet that could give him a chance to qualify for state championship because her coach drew the bib number 666
In October of this year (2017) the flight AY666 from Copenhagen to Helsinki (HEL) departed for the last time before being renamed AY954, this flight has been schedule 21 timed in Friday the 13th…what are the odds? A spokesperson from Finnair said that the number wasn’t renamed due to superstitious passengers, but did not give a reason either.
And let’s not forget that this number was the original name of the Macintosh SevenDust computer virus discovered in 1998.
But not everyone sees this number as a bad omen.
In china the number is considered a lucky one, and people often display it on their shop windows and neon signs. In China 666 can mean “everything goes smoothly”
Have you heard of Thelema? It’s a social spiritual philosophy developed in the early 1900, based upon a spiritual experience in Egypt by English writer and ceremonial magician Aleister Crowley. He adopted the title “the great beast 666”, as such this number is associated with him and his work.
And In Kabbalistic Judaism, 666 represents the creation and perfection of the world. Did you ever hear the world was created in 6 days? Plus 6 is also the numerical value of one of the letters in gods name.
So you see, 666 isn’t just related to the devil.
Nowadays you can find many people discussing how this prophetic events will become true, and they are trying to figure out when, how or who? Who is the Antichrist? When is the second coming of Jesus? Are we already in the 666 years of the beast reign and apocalypse?
I cannot answer those questions but I hope with this information you were able to understand more about this number.
